The 4 stages of Kolb

Concrete Experience
Reflective Observation
Conceptualization
Active Experimentation.

Those are the 4 phases of Kolb's Experiential model. Identify any experience your student may have, then guide them through reflection using Gibbs model on reflection and allow them to form a new mental framework.

Using the learner's new framework, as an instructor, allow them to implement that in the next concrete experience!

"SPIKES" Model for breaking bad news

How to break bad news

Within this episode, Muhammed eloquently showed, while using Kolb's model, how using SPIKES as a way to break bad news to a patient can be an effective way for any clinician.

Visit The Oncologist for a more in depth look into using the SPIKES model.

We are all learning, and in that process must be open to new ways in exploring our own concrete experiences. If you have not used the SPIKES method for those difficult conversations, review it, consider how it can be implemented in your practice, and then TRY IT OUT!
